¤Class-wide Project: WWI-era mixed-media newspaper (next 2 weeks)

HW: 1) READ timeline. Use the timeline to preview the major events/details of the war to spark your interest in the war (or you may already have something in mind...)

2) Start thinking about what interests you most about WWI. Think/ask if you have any family members who fought/were involved with either side!!

You will choose one aspect of the war that interests you most (a song, U-boats, etc.) and will analyze two primary sources (photo, song, family artifact, etc.) and write one newspaper article about that aspect of the war.

We will be putting together the newspaper in groups as a class (more details to come).

This lesson will introduce you to the resources of American Memory (from the Library of Congress). American Memory consists of more than 100 collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library of Congress. You can browse a listing of all collections and use the search tool to locate primary source material. Do not think of American Memory as an encyclopedia or textbook as it is more like a museum or archive with some unique resources or treasures to be found.

¤On a half-sheet of paper, use this description and your knowledge (of the war, and of imperialism) to classify whether this scenario could be considered an example or non-example of imperialism.

¤Try to find evidence of ALL five critical attributes of imperialism.

¤If they are all there, it could be an example. If not, non-example.

¤In 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq in search of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The U.S. wanted to remove Saddam Hussein and prevent another 9/11. The U.S. establishes a temporary U.S. military government, before helping Iraqis with their first democratic election. U.S. military forces finally left in 2011, but not before the U.S. secured oil resources.
